Photography has literally been around for centuries. Starting from blurry projections of images to now the high-tech imaging we use today.
Photos are a way for us to capture and preserve important memories—especially the places we’ve been and the people we’ve met. In a way, they are like portals we can look at and suddenly be taken back to a specific moment in our lives, like that time in Cabo.
To make sure you’re capturing the best photos that illustrate your adventure, we’re sharing tips for taking your own travel photos.
A Brief History of Photography
Contrary to what some may think, photography goes back for centuries. While, no, people didn’t snap picture with their iPhone in the 11th century, an Iraqi scientist did come up with the camera obscura. These images were projected on another surface and normally were upside down.
Hundreds of years later, in the 1830s, the first recorded image was created. And a hundred or so years later in the 80s and 90s, we have digital photography. And, now you can take an image with a simple click on your phone to share with all your friends and family.
Tips When Taking Your Own Travel Photos
Now, that you know the photography history basics, here are some tips so you can take great travel photos.
1. Research Your Location
If you want to take beautiful travel photos, you may want to consider researching your location beforehand. Look up the climate, when sun rises and sets, as well as the natural landscape. Research can be as easy as looking up the location on Instagram to see what other people have captured and what you might want to do differently.
The day before, you may want to go to your destination during the time you want to shoot and observe your surroundings. Can you get a good angle? Do you notice a specific spot where nature—whether it be birds, bees, ladybugs, etc.—are attracted to (if you want to take more nature-based photography)?
(Speaking of locations, read up on Charter Flights to Los Angeles by Stratos Jet Charters.)
2. Get Lost
As Professional Photographer, Robert Caputo, explains in National Geographic, don’t be afraid to get lost when you travel (of course, do so safely). Roam the streets, walk down alleys, look into shops, notice the expressions of the locals, watching the smiling faces of children…
Simply, take in the moment and get lost in the present. Don’t be obsessed with getting the perfect image. Let it happen; it will come when you least expect it.
For all you know you may leave your hostel or hotel room, camera in hand, thinking you are going to take photos of the water fountain in the town square only to be surprised that you end up taking photos of the locals on the corner.
3. It Is Ok to Make Mistakes
Since an image seems so permanent, we can feel like we can’t make mistakes when it comes to travel photos. Yes, you may have not been able to snap your camera in time to capture that affectionate smile or the moment just before the sun sets.
But, as we mentioned for Tip #2, that may not be what you are supposed to take. You may get an even better photo of what happens after those “missed opportunities.” So, always be on the lookout.
4. Share them!
